WHY NOW

Active school travel has moved up the agenda

England, Scotland and Wales are all setting clear ambitions for how children get to school.

England

60% of children walking or cycling to school by 2035

"Giving children the freedom to walk, wheel and cycle in early life will set habits and deliver health benefits for generations to come."

UK Government, Third Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy (CWIS3), June 2026

England

WORTH EVERY STEP

School journeys are the top priority for 2026-2030

Active Travel England's delivery plan puts safer, healthier journeys to school first. Taking part in behaviour change is now tracked as a measure of progress.

Active Travel England, Worth Every Step: delivery plan 2026 to 2030, June 2026

Scotland

Active travel the most popular choice for short journeys by 2030

Today, 38.8% of pupils walk to school and 4.7% cycle. That leaves clear room to grow the school run.

Scottish Government, Cycling Framework for Active Travel; Hands Up Scotland Survey 2025

Wales

45% of journeys by public transport, walking and cycling by 2040

"Enabling and encouraging active travel to school for as many children and young people as possible is essential to achieving our mode shift targets."

Welsh Government, Active Travel Delivery Plan 2024 to 2027; Llwybr Newydd

School travel programmes are also running across Northern Ireland and Ireland.

Councils are being asked to deliver this change and to prove it.

Love to Ride Schools helps you do both.
